Why do we clench our teeth when we feel stressed?

A fairly common problem faced by an increasingly large part of the population, mainly due to increased stress levels, is that of snoring. Roar it is the abnormal clenching or grinding of teeth during sleep but also during the day sometimes. As a parafunctional habit, it is done unconsciously, that is, without our will and is often associated with sleep disorders, such as obstructive sleep apnea.

The most common general symptoms of snoring are headaches, pain in the temporomandibular joint area, muscle pain in the face and/or neck area, difficulty opening the mouth fully, and sleep disruption. It is estimated that patients with tinnitus are 3 times more likely to suffer from frequent headaches.

The symptoms of humming at teeth they are particularly evident and may be the point from which the diagnosis of the condition is made. In particular, abnormal dental wear is observed in the form of abrasion on the cutting and chewing surfaces of the teeth.

Cracks or even microfractures are often created, while excessive clenching of the teeth can also lead to receding and inflamed gums.

But where does this harmful habit of clenching the teeth and jaws come from?

It seems that humming is an effect that is mainly linked to stress levels, lifestyle and sleep disorders. Smoking, caffeine (more than 6 cups), excessive alcohol consumption on the one hand, but also snoring, sleep apnea and depression on the other, are risk factors.

Roaring can also affect children, while it is very common in people who abuse substances or drugs. The relationship of snoring with stress and sleep disorders seems to be a two-way street as the nature of the noise fuels a vicious cycle of morbid manifestations.

How is humming treated?

Various opinions have been formulated - theories about how to deal with snoring and its pathological manifestations and consequences.

Muscle relaxant medication combined with management of stress levels is considered appropriate in several cases.

It has been proven that the manufacture of a personalized oral closure splint can also help. After checking the occlusion of the patient's teeth, the dentist can make a transparent mask specially for him that covers all the teeth of the upper jaw.

This brace is worn during sleep and apart from protecting the teeth from grinding, it also stabilizes the mouth closure and relaxes the muscles and temporomandibular joints.

In case snoring coexists with another sleep disorder, they should be treated in combination and the patient referred to specialized clinics.
