The researchers asked the participants which age group they were most sexually attracted to in their current phase of life and also what their sexual partners' ages were in the past 12 months.
As expected, the responses of men and women were different. Women appeared to generally prefer same-age or slightly older men.

Men, on the other hand, appeared to be fairly consistent in their preferences, appearing to prefer 25s in either their 20s or 40s.

Researchers argue that both men's and women's preferences are rooted in evolutionary biology and the ability of both sexes to bear and raise children.

Young women prefer older men because they can support them more in raising children, while men prefer young women because they are fertile. Women are most fertile in the middle of their second decade of life, with declining trends after 35.
