Fruits and vegetables improve psychology

Fruits and vegetables are an integral part of a balanced diet, while their benefits seem to be not only limited to physical health, as well new study, shows that increasing fruit and vegetable consumption can also improve mental health, and in just two weeks. For the purposes of the study, the results of which are published in the international scientific journal PLOS One, researchers from the University of New Zealand used data from 171 young adults, aged 18-25, who were divided into three groups. The participants in the first group continued to eat as usual, the second group were offered two extra servings of fresh fruit and vegetables daily, while the volunteers in the third group received vouchers to buy fresh fruit and vegetables and reminder messages to increase their consumption.
The study lasted two weeks and the psychological state of the participants was assessed through the assessment of characteristics such as mood, vitality, motivation and symptoms of anxiety and depression. Overall, volunteers who received the extra servings of fruit and vegetables appeared to have the highest consumption of these foods, reaching 3.7 servings per day, on average, while showing improvement in mental health traits such as vitality and mobilization.
On the other hand, neither group showed improvement in symptoms of anxiety and depression, which the researchers attribute to the short duration of the study. However, they say the study's findings suggest that increasing fruit and vegetable consumption could have immediate benefits for mental health, something that remains to be confirmed by more and longer-term studies.
