September 26: World Contraception Day
September 26 has been established as World Contraception Day, dedicated to the right of the woman for the moment she decides to have a child, avoiding possible unwanted pregnancy with all the unpleasant consequences, the main one being abortion.
The liberation of women, the liberalization of sexual relations, the scourge of Aids and demographic data, are some of the parameters that create new data and requirements for the need to take contraceptive measures.
In our country, the fertility rate remains low, while the number of abortions is at high levels, despite the fact that in recent years, due to the more frequent use of condoms, it has decreased by 25%. 150,000 abortions are recorded every year.
Today, throughout Europe, except Greece, the most popular and safe method of contraception is the contraceptive pill. It is the method that offers almost complete contraceptive protection and is considered one of the most rigorously scientifically tested drugs in the world.
75 million pregnancies worldwide are unwanted, according to UN figures. Of these, 45 million are led to abortion, while 20 million are performed under unsafe conditions.
At least 585,000 women die each year from pregnancy complications, while half of these deaths could have been prevented if adequate contraceptive services had been available.
