Breast palpation: Learn how to do it right in 2 minutes

Today while looking for various videos on Youtube I came across a very useful and important video-guide for every woman. A video with simple instructions for self-examination, which every woman should carry out from the age of 18 years.

Breast self-examination contributes significantly to the early diagnosis of breast cancer and to a complete cure. 40% breast cancers are detected by women during self-examination, which is why it is so important.

How to do breast palpation yourself:

1) Stand in front of the mirror with the arms down and parallel to the body. Check the breast for any changes in color, size or shape. Check for a lump or some redness in the nipple.

2) Raise the arms up or bring them behind the head and check the breasts again. Then press the hands to the waist in order to tighten the chest muscles and check it again for the above symptoms.

3) Palpate each breast using the three middle fingers of the opposite hand starting from the armpit towards the nipple. Make continuous small movements with steady pressure in an up-down or circular direction.

4) Lie on the bed and place your right hand behind your head and a pillow under your right shoulder. Using the three middle fingers of the left hand, palpate the right breast, repeating the above movements. Also examine the armpit. Finally, squeeze the nipple, checking for any discharge. Repeat the process on the other breast.

Self-examination should start from the age of 18 and it should be done between the 8th and 10th day of the cycle, because the breasts are then softer and less sensitive. After menopause you can examine your breasts on the first day of each month.

If you notice any change in the shape of the breast or nipple you should contact your doctor. From the age of 40 you should start having a mammogram every year. In some cases with heredity they start even earlier.
