Perfect Easter eggs and tips for dyeing them with vegetable materials

Traditionally every year the day we paint them eggs is Great Thursday. Their red color symbolizes the blood of Christ but also the Resurrection, joy, hope, however in recent years we see not only red eggs but also other options. Below you will see some tips that you should follow in order to dye your eggs correctly.

Choose fresh eggs. To paint them properly, they should be out of the fridge for 24 hours and at room temperature. After washing them thoroughly with cold water, wipe them with a soft cloth sprinkled with vinegar to clean them. Boil your eggs for 10-15 minutes.

How is the painting done?
First, make sure you wear a pair of gloves if you don't want red knuckles.
Prefer dyes that dissolve in cold water and you don't have to boil your eggs in them. Commercial paints give specific instructions for their use which you should follow. You usually need to leave them for 3-4 minutes. Remove them from the paint and let them dry on absorbent paper. To polish them, pour a little olive oil on a soft, cotton cloth and rub the eggs with it

You only need a thin pantyhose, twine and leaves of flowers or herbs to decorate your eggs. Cut the pantyhose into small pieces, calculating the pieces to be of such a size as to wrap an egg. Place a foil over the egg, cover with a piece of pantyhose, stretch it well to hold the foil still, and tie the stretched pantyhose tightly with string. Dip the eggs in the pot with the dye and leave them for as long as the package suggests. Take them out of the pot and let them dry. Carefully remove the tulle and peel off the leaflet. Polish with an oiled cotton cloth.

Plant materials:

  • Red Cabbage Dye for Blue Eggs:. Throw thin strips of red cabbage into the pot. Add the eggs and fill the pot with water. Boil the eggs for at least 20 minutes.
  • Turmeric Dye for Yellow Eggs: Pour 4 tablespoons of turmeric into the pot with the eggs and water. Boil them for 20 minutes.
  • Dye with onion leaves for red eggs: Pick outer leaves from red onions and put them in the pot where you will boil the eggs. Carefully place a row of eggs and fill the pot with cold water. Put the pot on the fire and boil for 20 minutes (from the time it starts boiling). Let the eggs dry and polish them.

Extra tip: If you want to achieve nicer colors with the plant materials, choose white eggs.
