Melon vs watermelon: The battle of the summer
For many it is watermelon and melon they are considered fattening, as often their sweet taste has unfairly classified them in this fruit category. But the truth is that they don't have many calories because they contain a lot of water. Let's see them in detail:
Melon
The melon, like all fruits, because of its natural sugars it gives us energy. At the same time, it is rich in potassium, a mineral necessary for the health of the heart and the regulation of blood pressure, which unfortunately in the summer is lost in abundance with sweat. It is also rich in antioxidants, such as vitamin C and beta-carotene, thus contributing to strengthening the body's defenses and protecting it from cardiovascular diseases and various forms of cancer. In addition, it contains high amounts of adenosine, a substance with anticoagulant properties that acts protectively against strokes. Finally, the melon's nutrients include vitamin B6, which is essential for the proper functioning of the nervous system.
Watermelon
The watermelon it also gives us energy and contains significant amounts of potassium, vitamin C and vitamin A, while its high water content contributes to better hydration of the body. At the same time, it is rich in lycopene, an ingredient that exerts a strong antioxidant effect and has been linked by many studies to a reduction in the risk of various forms of cancer, especially prostate cancer. Characteristic of the white part between the red flesh and the watermelon rind is that it contains the substance citrulline, an amino acid that is converted in the body to arginine, which is one of the essential amino acids for the body and contributes to the better functioning of blood vessels and the improvement of circulation .
What is better; Nutrient comparison chart
In the comparison between them we would give a slight edge to the melon. It is significantly superior in potassium, which we need in the summer because we lose it through sweat. At the same time, it has more fiber, as well as vitamin C and friendly acid. As for their caloric content, it is low and almost equal. If they are consumed in a "controlled" amount, both the watermelon as well as the melon they have to offer us valuable nutrients with a low energy "cost".
