How much lemon should you use?
To reap all the benefits of lemon, you need to use it whole, that is, with its peel. A related study published in the scientific journal Journal of Clinical Biochemistry and Nutrition showed that the polyphenols present in the lemon peel help in weight loss when someone follows a high-fat diet.
In addition to contributing to weight loss, lemons are a rich source of vitamin C, which is essential for collagen production, strengthens the immune system and activates glutathione, the body's main antioxidant. Bates recommends adding at least half a lemon (sliced) to 300ml of water.
Lemon in cold, lukewarm or hot water?
The answer is in warm water. The reason is that the high temperature helps release the vitamin C and polyphenols from both the lemon and its peel. According to Bates, although vitamin C doesn't remain stable at all heat levels, meaning it can decrease when water reaches high temperatures, even boiling isn't able to neutralize the benefits.
It is recalled that according to the World Health Organization, drinks should ideally be consumed lukewarm, as hot drinks increase the risk of cancer.
When is the right time to drink lemon water?
Our body is very dehydrated in the morning when we wake up, so the morning hours are suitable for drinking lemon water. “While you sleep, you lose a lot of water through breathing. Hydrating with a warm glass of lemon water when you wake up is the best way to replenish fluids lost during the night and start your day," notes Bates.
It is true that lemon water can help you in many ways. Their combination, however, does not provide you with more than each of these two important nutritional elements individually. It just happens that, from a taste point of view, they match each other and thus are promoted as a "magical combination".
Caution: Do not consume large amounts of water with lemon during the day, as due to the acidity of the lemon, you may damage the enamel of your teeth. Lemon also increases the ability to absorb iron, so if you have high iron, consult your doctor.
