Sedentary motion sickness: What it is, what causes it and what you should do
Chances are you who clicked and opened this article are sitting up and already freaking out just reading the title. You should know that this group of diseases associated with a sedentary lifestyle has been named sedentary disease.
Investigations have linked sitting for long periods of time to a range of health problems, including obesity and metabolic syndrome (a cluster of sub-diseases that includes elevated blood pressure, high blood sugar levels, excess body fat around the waist and abnormal cholesterol levels). THE sedentary lifestyle it also appears to increase the risk of death from cardiovascular disease and cancer.
One study compared adults who spent less than two hours a day in front of the television or sitting at a desk in front of a screen with others who spent more than four hours a day in sedentary work or sedentary leisure (eg television). The researchers found that those in the second group had:
- About 50% increased risk of death from any cause
- About 125% in symptoms associated with cardiovascular disease, such as chest pain (angina), or heart attack
The increased risk from a sedentary lifestyle was studied separately from other traditional risk factors for cardiovascular disease, such as smoking and hypertension.
Sitting in front of the TV isn't the only problem. Any prolonged sitting (such as at a desk at work, or behind the wheel) can be harmful. Going to the gym a few hours a week does not appear to significantly offset the risk.
What you should do:
You need to sit less and generally move more. You can start by simply standing up a bit or taking a few steps "to stretch" whenever you have the chance at work, or think of ways to walk around a bit while you work.
- Stand up while talking on the phone, or while eating your snack.
- If you work sitting at a desk for long periods of time, try a tall desk that puts you in a standing position, or improvise by working at a tall table, or bench.
- Take a short walk with your colleagues and don't get up from your desk to go sit somewhere else when you take a break from work.
The effect of movement (even relaxed/gentle movement) can bring great health benefits. For starters, you'll burn more calories. This can lead to weight loss and increased energy throughout the day.
Even better, the muscle activity required to stand and/or move causes important processes in the body related to the distribution of fats and sugars in the body. When you sit, these processes are delayed and your health suffers.————————————————————————————————————————————— ———————–
