"I will quit smoking": The 1st goal of 2017 and how to achieve it
You want to quit smoking, you've tried everything and still haven't found the way. Set it as a goal for the new year 2017. According with research by British scientists, the best strategy to quit smoking is not to do it slowly, but "all at once".
THE study shows that those who try to quit smoking gradually, by reducing the number of cigarettes they smoke little by little, are less likely to quit eventually than those who "cut it with a knife".
The University of Oxford researchers, led by Dr. Nicola Lindson-Hawley, who made the relevant publication in the medical journal "Annals of Internal Medicine", carried out a comparative test with about 700 smokers who wanted to quit.
The volunteers were divided into two groups: the members of the first group stopped smoking abruptly on a predetermined date, while the members of the second group gradually reduced the number of cigarettes they smoked over two weeks, until the same predetermined smoking cessation date.
Both teams had support with tips, patches and nicotine gum. After the quit date, the volunteers were followed for months to see if they had actually quit or relapsed.
One month later, 49% (half) of those who had quit abruptly remained…smokeless, compared to 39% among those who had quit gradually. Therefore, those who cut it abruptly are 25% more likely to cut it than those who try more gradually.
Most experts have always recommended quitting cigarettes abruptly, but most smokers tend to take the gentler approach – only it's less effective, new research shows.
Dr Nicola Lindson-Hawley pointed out that many people can't even fathom cutting out, or cutting out completely and not smoking even a few cigarettes a day. For them, as he said, it is preferable, rather than doing nothing, to limit it at least to an extent. But if one has made a decision to cut it completely, then it will be better to make the brave decision to cut it abruptly and not gradually.
