This type of sugar should NEVER be avoided!

If we think about it chemically, the sugars in fruit and the sugars in a candy they are the same, but the health effects could not be more different. THE sugar containing a fruit is made up of fructose and glucose, just like the processed sugar in a candy. The body processes fructose in the liver so it does not cause an insulin response while glucose begins to break down in the stomach and requires the release of insulin into the bloodstream so it can be metabolized quickly. As to which one is better than the other, the answer is simple, none.

The natural sugars in fruit are processed a little differently by the body because the fiber in fruit reduces the effect of sugars on blood sugar levels. Plus, it gets water, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and other health-enhancing nutrients. Studies have shown that eating fruit helps protect against some cancers, heart disease, stroke and other conditions. Fruits can even help with weight control.

When we say you should cut down on sugars, we're referring to added sugars: those found in cakes, candies, cereals, soft drinks that don't offer the extras that fruit does.

The sugars in fruit juices are also different. Although the juice contains vitamins and minerals, it does not contain fiber. So the sugars from fruit juices enter the body much faster than those from whole fruits. Juice is essentially a more concentrated source of sugars and calories. As a result, drinking juice quickly increases blood sugar and hunger comes very soon due to the sharp drop.

A cup of orange slices has about 50-60 calories and 11.9 grams of sugars while a cup of orange juice has twice as many calories (112 calories) and sugars (20.8g). So, opt for whole fruit, aiming for at least 2 servings a day.

Dietitian's Tip: Adults should eat at least 5 servings of fruit and vegetables every day, but most of us don't. A portion of fruit is what fits in the palm of each person's hand. That is, 1 apple, 1 banana, 1 orange, 2 kiwis, 2 tangerines, 30g of dried fruit and a glass of 150ml 100% fruit / vegetable juice without sugar.
