Six ways to get boys to love extracurricular reading!
According investigations the girls they love reading more than the boys.
Research, again, shows that reading books outside of school can improve children's academic performance. Usually, however, boys have a more negative attitude towards reading and see it as more of a 'girl's sport'.
But let's not stick to stereotypes. Let's focus on the positives of reading but also on our boy's personal interests in order to encourage him to read literary or other, outside of school, books (science, comics, etc.).
What can you do
Recommend books to your child based on their interests. Start a conversation with your children about the joy of reading and how it will benefit them. Talk about his interests and choose books accordingly.
Make sure they have access to libraries. Usually most schools have a lending library. With the help of the teachers, encourage your boy to visit her and choose the book he likes. Access to books is essential to promoting reading.
Continue to read to and with the boys for as long as possible, as many boys find it enjoyable and fun even when they are older.
Provide opportunities for silent reading at home despite the heavy demands of their daily schedule.
Have the books easily accessible and available. Strange as it may seem, compared to our time, boys who read prefer to read from a printed book rather than from a screen. Have a small library in their room with books they might be interested in and let them take the initiative in reading when they feel ready.
Introduce them to reading as one enjoyable and acceptable hobby, be the role model yourself. Let your children see you reading with pleasure.
