One minute a day. You can;
Just one minute of running a day is enough to get better bone health women, according to a British study published in the International Journal of Epidemiology.
Researchers from the Universities of Exeter and Lancaster found that women who did short bursts of high-intensity weightlifting, matched with moderate-intensity jogging if they were premenopausal or slow jogging if they were postmenopausal, had better bone health.
The scientists evaluated data from the UK Biobank and found that women who did an average of 60-120 seconds of high-intensity weight lifting per day had 4% better bone health than those who exercised for less than a minute.
The sample included more than 2,500 women, and the researchers compared their physical activity levels with their bone health, as measured by ultrasound of the heel bone.
"Although we don't yet know whether it's better to do short bursts of vigorous exercise at different times of the day or to exercise at a specific time once or twice a week, what is certain is that there is a close relationship between high-intensity weight training and better bone health in women," says lead study author Dr. Victoria Stiles.
She suggests we all add a few minutes of jogging or other vigorous exercise to our day, because good bone health has multiple benefits, including preventing osteoporosis and reducing the risk of bone fractures in old age.
